Surgery By Keyhole Frequently Asked Questions about Hernias

Q  I would like keyhole surgery on my hernia, but my surgeon does not offer it.
A Ask to be referred to a consultant laparoscopic surgeon who does.
Q  How quickly can I return to work and sport after surgery?
A Depends on what you do, but this is faster with keyhole surgery. Most people are able to return back to work immediately providing excessive straining is not required. Most normal activities including light exercise (swimming, jogging, cycling) are possible within days, however high-level contact sport (rugby, football) should be avoided for a few weeks.
Q  Should all hernias be repaired laparoscopically?
A No. Appropriate surgery must be recommended, based on the type of the hernia and the individual patient. However, laparoscopic surgery is both possible and potentially advantageous in most cases, and this option should at least be discussed with patients.
Q  Are hernias dangerous?
A Yes. A strangulated hernia can be fatal if not treated immediately
Q  Are there any other treatments other than surgery?
A Only the wearing of a support (truss) to keep the hernia “in”.
Q  I think I have a hernia, what do I do?
A See your GP. If your GP agrees, he or she will refer you to a general surgeon. However, if you wish to have keyhole surgery (laparoscopic hernia repair), then make sure you get referred to a consultant with a special interest in keyhole surgery.
